• Thursday 8 January 2026 School closure - Friday 9th February 2026 Amber weather warning in place. There is an Amber weather warning for snowfall for this evening and tomorrow. Any decision regarding the closure of the school will be made by 8am tomorrow morning (Friday 9th January). We will send notification via Class Charts and on our Facebook page. • Friday 19 December 2025 Newtown High School announces appointment of new Headteacher, Mrs Havard Newtown High School is delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Havard as the new Headteacher, overseeing both John Beddoes and Newtown campuses. Mrs Havard has successfully led one campus as Acting Head and will now take on the role of Headteacher across the entire school.Mrs Havard brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to the school community. Her leadership during her tenure as Acting Head has been instrumental in driving progress and fostering a positive learning environment.Speaking about her new role, Mrs Havard said: “I am honoured to take on the position of Headteacher for both campuses. This is an exciting new chapter for our school, and I look forward to working with staff, students, and families to build on our successes and continue moving the school forward. • Thursday 18 December 2025 Year 9 Newsletter Earlier this term, a group of Year 9 students were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with local, award-winning journalist David Williams, co-founder and director of MyTown Media Ltd (which delivers the hyper-local news services of MyNewtown and MyWelshpool). He worked with them to provide expert advice and guidance as they put together their very own special edition of the school newsletter, to highlight what they think are the best aspects of life at Newtown High School.Today they welcomed David back to the school to share the final version of their newsletter. We're sure you'll agree that they have done a fantastic job! They have worked so hard on this project, and we are very proud of them all. Thank you also to David for giving his time this term to come in and work with us.
• Thursday 18 December 2025 Newtown High School Celebrates Removal from Estyn Review John Beddoes and Newtown Campuses are delighted to announce the exciting news that the school has been officially removed from Estyn Review. The Estyn team have recognised the further hard work that has been put in place since their visit in October 2023 towards the recommendations. This achievement marks a significant milestone in our ongoing journey of improvement and excellence.

• Tuesday 18 November 2025 Year 9 media workshop A group of our Year 9 students have been upskilling their media know-how whilst working on a special project to promote Newtown High School. As part of this, we were very fortunate to receive a visit from local award-winning journalist David Williams, co-founder and director of MyTown Media Ltd (the hyper-local news service behind MyNewtown and MyWelshpool). He spent time talking to the students about his inspiring career in the media, including his varied experiences in international sports journalism and his time as media advisor to HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan.

• Thursday 6 November 2025 World Skills UK Competition In 2025, for the first time the World Skills UK competition is held in Wales. Students from the Newtown Campus were invited to witness the passing of the World Skills UK torch relay, passing on to the next generation of competitors.Students got to take part in Catering Activities, tours of the facilities and on-site restaurant, introduction into different courses available in Further Education, the chance to watch live practical cooking demonstrations including Crêpes Suzette and mocktails and most importantly sampling a range of different foods.
• Thursday 23 October 2025 Cogurdd and PobUrdd Competition Winners We had a very successful CogUrdd and PobUrdd competition on Friday 17th October with so many delicious dishes and desserts made. It wasn't easy to pick our winners - the results are as follows:
• Tuesday 21 October 2025 Pearl of Africa Choir On Monday 20th October The Pearl of Africa Choir came to our Newtown Campus to do a performance for years 7 and 8 in assembly, then workshops with year 8 all day. This was followed by a concert in the hall in the evening.

• Wednesday 21 January 2026 Powys Indoor Athletics Finals A massive well done to all of our pupils who competed fantastically well at today's Powys Indoor Athletics Finals at Maldwyn Leisure Centre!
• Tuesday 20 January 2026 Powys Schools Cross Country Championships An excellent day of cross country running last week for our pupils who competed in the annual Powys Schools Cross Country Championships at Dolerw Park.
• Tuesday 16 December 2025 Welsh Cup Boys Football Round-Up This week finished off a jam-packed term of football action in the Welsh Cup, lots of ups and some downs however excellent effort and conduct from our fantastic pupils!
• Friday 5 December 2025 U14 North Powys Hockey Tournament Our U14 girls' hockey team took part in the North Powys Hockey Tournament on Tuesday 2nd December, showing fantastic teamwork, determination, and school spirit throughout the day.
• Tuesday 25 November 2025 North Powys Swimming Gala Our pupils had an amazing day at the North Powys Swimming Gala at Maldwyn LC, expertly organised by DMPROCoach, on Tuesday 25th November.
• Monday 24 November 2025 U13 Boys Basketball Festival Last week our U13 Boys Basketball teams had a great day at the North Powys Basketball Festival held at Maldwyn LC.
• Wednesday 19 November 2025 KS3 Girls Football Tournament Latham Park played host to an exciting day of football as KS3 girls from across North Powys competed in the annual Small-Sided Football Tournament. With teams from Years 7, 8, and 9 taking part, the competition was fierce, and the performances were nothing short of inspiring.
• Tuesday 18 November 2025 U16 Netball November 2025 Our Year 10 and 11 Girls competed in the U16 North Powys Netball Tournament last week which proved to be a excellent showcase of skill, determination, and teamwork, in a series of competitive fixtures.
• Monday 10 November 2025 North Powys KS3 Football Tournament Success A cracking day of football at Latham Park for last Thursday's (6th November) North Powys KS3 Boys Football Tournament.
• Thursday 6 November 2025 Welsh Cup Under 13 Girls On Wednesday 5th November, our Under 13 girls made the trip to Welshpool in the 2nd round of the Welsh Cup. The game was incredibly competitive, seeing the game end in a 4-4 draw, with Welshpool advancing on penalties.

• Thursday 23 October 2025 U14 Boys Welsh Cup vs Bro Hyddgen On Wednesday 22nd October our u14 boys football team welcomed Bro Hyddgen for their 2nd round Welsh Cup match. Goals from Alvaro x3, Alfie x3, Henry x2, Tom PL and Tommy P earned a 10-3 win to book their place in the Powys final vs Welshpool, to be played after half term.
• Thursday 23 October 2025 U18 Netball Tournament On Tuesday 21st October our Year 10 & 11 Netball team went to Ysgol Bro Caereinion and competed in the U18 North Powys Netball Tournament. Playing up an age group, they were prepared and ready for some good quality netball and some physically tough games. They fought very hard in all 4 matches scoring in every game played, although final scores were against us.
• Wednesday 22 October 2025 Welsh Cup U16 vs Maesydderwen On Monday 20th October our u16 boys team welcomed Maesydderwen, the most southernly-based Powys school, who made the long trip up from Ystradgynlais, for the second of their Welsh Cup matches.
• Friday 17 October 2025 Year 7 Welsh Cup Football & Show Racism the Red Card Our Year 7 boys football team played their first game on Thursday 16th October, where they made the trip over to Llanfair to play Bro Caereinion. They came away with an impressive 5-1 win after a confident performance from the 18 player squad, from which every player played their part in an excellent team effort.Goals from Rocco x3, Noah V and George W after excellent team passing and build up play helped seal the win, with all pupils contributing positively and showing fantastic effort, commitment and conduct! • Wednesday 15 October 2025 U16 Welsh Cup Football vs Penweddig Our u16 boys football team travelled to Aberystwyth on the 14th of October for their 1st round match vs Penweddig, where they came away with a hard-working & solid 1-1 draw.
• Tuesday 14 October 2025 Year 7 & 8 Netball & New Kit Sponsor Last Thursday our Year 7 and 8 Netball teams visited Llanfyllin to play some friendly games in preparation for upcoming tournaments.
• Tuesday 14 October 2025 U15 Boys Rugby RGC East Cup Qualifier Last week our u15 boys rugby squad made the trip to Wrexham for the RGC East Cup Qualifier tournament.
• Friday 10 October 2025 Welsh Cup U15 Girls On Thursday 9th October, our Under 15 girls made the trip to Llanfyllin in the first round of the Welsh Cup. The game was very competitive, physical, and hard-fought. Congratulations goes to Llanfyllin for their 3-1 win.
• Wednesday 8 October 2025 Welsh Cup Football u13 & u15 vs Calon Cymru Last week both our u13 & u15 Boys Football Teams booked their places in the next round of the Welsh Cup with strong displays against hosts Calon Cymru.
• Friday 26 September 2025 Welsh Cup Football u14 5 vs 1 Llanidloes Our u14 boys football team made a winning start to their Welsh Cup campaign, with an impressive display against visitors Llanidloes in an entertaining match played in the best spirit by both teams.
• Thursday 17 July 2025 Newtown High School Sports Day 2025 We had a fantastic time at our annual Sports Day this week, our pupils absolutely smashed it with great participation, loads of team-work, so many fantastic performances and big smiles all day. A huge well done to you all!
• Monday 14 July 2025 Dance World Cup - World Finals A massive well done to Jessie Roberts who competed in the Dance World Cup - World Finals in Burgos, Spain, last weekend. She did amazingly well to come 19th in the Junior Solo Jazz section. Amazing work Jessie, we are really proud of you!
• Thursday 10 July 2025 Welsh Cup & Plate Athletics Finals Absolutely amazing effort from our fantastic pupils at yesterday's Welsh Cup & Plate Athletics Finals at Brecon.

• Wednesday 2 July 2025 James Corfield Memorial Cricket Match vs Welshpool Tuesday 1st July saw the annual match up between Newtown HS vs Welshpool HS in very good conditions at Montgomery Cricket Club.
• Wednesday 25 June 2025 NASUWT Powys Athletics Cup A fantastic day yesterday as we hosted the annual NASUWT Powys Schools Athletics Cup & Plate, which saw 10 secondary schools from across the county compete at Maldwyn Athletics Track in a bumper day of schools athletics.
• Thursday 12 June 2025 Year 7/8/9 Sports Leaders at the Primary Schools Cricket Festivals A massive well done to our Sports Leaders from Years 7/8/9, who did a fantastic job leading and officiating at the local Primary Schools Cricket Festivals at Newtown Cricket Club over the last two weeks. A big thank you to Paul Rowe from Cricket Wales and Rebecca from Sport Powys for giving them the opportunity!
• Friday 23 May 2025 Powys Schools Athletics & UK Sportshall Success On Thursday 22nd May pupils from Years 7-10 travelled down to Brecon for the Powys Schools Championships. Tooo many excellent performances to mention, full of confidence, determination and commitment, cheered on by their fellow pupils in a real team effort. More results to follow and as always, we are incredibly proud of our amazing pupils, massive well done to you all, you were all fantastic!
