Welsh Cup Under 13 Girls
On Wednesday 5th November, our Under 13 girls made the trip to Welshpool in the 2nd round of the Welsh Cup. The game was incredibly competitive, seeing the game end in a 4-4 draw, with Welshpool advancing on penalties.
Newtown started the game strongly with a smart finish from striker Madison on the break. Then, strong work from centre midfielders Roxie and Emilia set winger Gracie away and she battled well, before tucking home brilliantly to give us a 2-0 lead. For 15 minutes Newtown then had total control of the game and played brilliantly. Unfortunately, over a crazy 5 minutes near the end of the half, a combination of poor defending from Newtown and good finishing from Welshpool saw them take a 3-2 lead.
Despite the setback, Newtown settled down, regained composure, and began playing some good football which led to pressure from winger Evie set Madison away again and a good finish from her across the keeper made it 3-3 at half time.
In the second half Newtown continued the positive play, which eventually saw an attack down the right fall to Madison who unleashed a brilliant shot from the edge of the box into the opposite top corner across the keeper to complete a wonderful hat-trick. Newtown then defended brilliantly and the back 4 of Amelia, Ella, Claire, and Bella denied Welshpool on several occasions until the very last minute, which saw a sliced clearances bobble and bounce around and fall at the feet of the Welshpool striker.
Newtown tried to pick themselves up after this heartbreak for penalties but unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Welshpool progressed. Congratulations to them. However, huge well done to our Newtown players who did amazingly and thoroughly deserved to win that game. A huge improvement from last year and we are very positive about future tournaments and games for this group, so well-done girls!
