Taith Saith
In 2022 we introduced a brand new purpose led curriculum, bespoke for our Year 7 learners, Taith Saith (which literally translates to Journey Seven). Taith Saith focuses on ensuring effective transition from Primary to Secondary school through providing authentic learning experiences, that allows each student to develop their knowledge, understanding, CHARACTER and a range of skills. At the heart of this work is the 4 Core Purposes and its characteristics.
The Aims of Taith Saith
The key aims of the Taith Saith curriculum for Year 7 are:
- To allow all students to develop their Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competency Skills
- To ensure a smoother transition. Much like the primary curriculum, students will be taught by the same’ teacher for a percentage of their time. The umbrella of subjects that will be taught by the same teacher include History, RPE, PSE, Geography and Drama.
- To allow pupils to make connections between Humanities, Health & Wellbeing & Expressive Arts through authentic learning experiences
- To support pupil wellbeing even further, not only in the classroom but through developing outdoor learning experiences which will include Forest Schools / Onsite Growing Area / Small Animal Care etc.
Why have Taith Saith?
The reason behind the introduction of Taith Saith to our Year 7 curriculum is to:
- Provide our students with the best chance to really settle into secondary school life, enabling them to have the security of a constant teacher who knows them well, just as their year 6 teachers do.
- Support our key priorities of improving the Literacy & Wellbeing of all pupils.
- Develop & build relationships and promote a sense of belonging.
- Improve students Wellbeing, Character and develop a positive can-do Growth Mindset with the platform to maximise their potential for the rest of their time at Newtown High School.
Taith Saith is a key part of our plans to introduce and embed the New Curriculum for Wales, for all learners, by 2023. Here is a link to the Welsh Government Parental Guidance to the New Curriculum for Wales. Within the guidance it states:
“The Welsh Government wants to make sure that your child has the knowledge, skills and experiences they’ll need to make the most of life.”
We feel Taith Saith is a perfect spring board to allow for these opportunities, outside of the old curriculum structure of discrete subjects taught by multiple teachers.
