Considerations for parents could include;
- Parental control settings on
Home Broadband / Wi-Fi including the ability to limit access to content and time on devices.
Devices directly to limit access to content, apps, payment and screen time.
Ensure apps and games are set appropriately to limit contact and sharing of personal information with unknown persons and keep personal data secure.
- Education
Talk to young people about online safety and make it a regular conversation.
Take an interest in what they are doing and what apps etc they like to use.
Create an environment where the children will want to come and tell parents or teachers about something they saw or experienced online that made them uncomfortable.
Discuss how information can be false and ways to check if something might be genuine.
Have a conversation about their conduct online and how sharing posts, message and images could last indefinitely.
Depending on the age consider keeping devices in shared family spaces and think carefully about the amount of time spent on screen (outside of school work) including TV.
Listen to the guidance on age ratings for apps and games. The terms and conditions for social media apps for instance only allows 13 years and above.

Be cautious of unsolicited contact and do not click on links sent in messages or provide personal details to anyone online or on the phone.
