Newtown High School

Welsh Cup U16 vs Maesydderwen

On Monday 20th October our u16 boys team welcomed Maesydderwen, the most southernly-based Powys school, who made the long trip up from Ystradgynlais, for the second of their Welsh Cup matches.

In monsoon conditions Newtown, playing down the slope in the 1st half, opened the scoring with a close range headed effort from Riley after Jake’s pinpoint corner ball. Maesydderwen levelled just before half time to make it 1-1 at the break with all to play for in the second half.

Newtown opened the scoring again after the break, with an in-swinging corner from the left from Jake finding its way in at the back post to make it 2-1, before Jake scored a near identical goal direct from the corner again, this time from the right. Good play, starting from Kyle in goal to Shay at right back, before linking well with Joel, Lennon and Jake in midfield, set up Jayden who placed his shot accurately in the bottom left corner to make it 4-1 and put the result beyond doubt. Maesydderwen scored late to make it 4-2 just before the final whistle was blown on an entertaining, hard-fought and very wet match-up between the two teams.

Well done to all players, congratulations to our u16s on the win and a big thank you to Maesydderwen for the game!
