EMA

Welcome to the Sixth Form section of the website. We have general information about our Sixth Form, as well as Open Evening and individual subject pages.

Application is through Chweched Powys Sixth - our partnership with other Powys Sixth Forms.

The information below is from Student Finance Wales - www.studentfinancewales.co.uk - information correct as of November 2021.

EMA is for 16 to 18 year olds living in Wales, who want to continue their education after school leaving age. If you're eligible, you could get £30 a week, paid every two weeks.

Before you apply for EMA there are few things you will need to check to make sure you qualify.

  • Date of Birth - you must be 16-18 years old on the 31st of August of the year you start your post-16 education
  • Course - you must be studying at a participating school or college on an ‘eligible’ course
  • Household Income - this must be below a certain level to receive EMA
  • Nationality and Residency – If you are a UK citizen living in Wales you should be eligible for EMA

There are four main things that determine if you can get EMA:

  1. Your date of birth
  2. Your course
  3. Your household income
  4. Your nationality

Your date of birth

You have to be between 16 and 18 years old on the 31st of August of the year you start your post-16 education.

Your course

You must be studying at a participating school or college on an 'eligible' course that is:

  • An academic or vocational course up to and including Level 3; and
  • Full-time at school; or
  • A minimum of 12 guided hours at college;
  • Courses must last at least 10 weeks

You don’t need to study in Wales to get EMA. As long as you live in Wales and your school/college is participating in the scheme, you can apply for EMA.

There are lots of courses you can do to get EMA such as:

  • GCSEs;
  • ‘A’ or ‘AS’ levels;
  • BTEC, GNVQ, NVQ courses;
  • Basic Skills courses.

Your household income

Your household income must be below a certain level for you to be able to receive EMA. There are two different levels, depending on your family circumstances:

  • Household income must be £20,817 or less if you are the only young person in the household.
  • Household income must be £23,077 or less if there are any additional young people eligible for child benefit in the household.

The FE calculator can help you work out whether you might be entitled to EMA.

There is more detailed information about how household income and additional children in the household can affect your entitlement to EMA in this section:

Your nationality and residency status

If you are a UK citizen living in Wales, you should be eligible for EMA.

If you’re not a UK citizen you may still be eligible for EMA. If you complete the application form and return it to us we’ll let you know whether or not you are eligible. You can download a form from this section:
