Welsh Cup Quarter Final u13 boys vs Whitchurch High School
On Wednesday 12th March our u13 boys football team had an early start and a long trip down to the capital for their quarter final against the reigning Welsh Schools Champions in this age group.
The boys had battled their way into the last 8 schools in Wales with a series of spirited wins in the earlier rounds, however came up against a top quality team who will no doubt be there or there abouts come the final reckoning again.
Whitchurch capitalised on early pressure with two goals scored after a number of corners that Newtown found difficulty in dealing with. Once settled, the boys managed to put some good attacking play together, however couldn’t convert these into any meaningful chances to trouble the impressive home Cardiff City Academy goalkeeper. The home team, picked from a year group of 400 pupils and including a number of Cardiff City & Swansea Academy players, continued to show their class, despite the best efforts of the Newtown back four and Ryan in goal, and continued to dominate the game with more goals, resulting in a commanding 8-0 win for the hosts.
Captain and center-back James was outstanding throughout, midfielder Jack came closest to a Newtown goal with a chance that beat the home gk but went agonisingly wide, all of the squad put in 100% effort and never stopped trying until the final whistle. They can certainly hold their heads up high and be super proud of getting this far in the competition, a great experience for them all.
Thank you Whitchurch, best of luck in the semi-final and also a massive thank you to our community partners Newtown Whitestars Junior FC and Trax for generously helping to pay for the bus, your help is massively appreciated by all at NHS!
