Under-15 Girls Powys Rugby Festival

Today, our Under-15 Girls rugby team took part in a Powys Schools rugby festival at Cobra RFC. The girls gave a great account of themselves in the sunshine and significantly improved as the day went on, both in terms of performance and results.

The girls, who lacked a core of experienced club players, started slowly, losing their first two games to strong rugby sides, Bro Caereinion and Llanfyllin. There was a significant improvement in performance in the Llanfyllin game, but a positive result still eluded the girls.

In the third game against Welshpool, our girls delivered a fantastic performance. They took the lead in the first half after some strong ball carrying from Ebony and Sophia, before Cara finished off a well-worked try with great determination, fighting through some strong tackles. Cara also kicked the conversion from a tough angle to put the girls 7-0 up. Welshpool came back strongly in the second half, using the wind to their advantage. Despite some solid defensive work from Ebony, Sophia, Sophie, Mia, and Cerys, amongst others, Welshpool scored a good try but missed the conversion, making the score 7-5. With just seconds left in the game, despite Mr. Cross’ desire to kick the ball into touch to secure the victory, WRU officer Gareth Kelly, who was helping us today, and the girls decided to push for another try. Good work through the phases from Skye, Madii, and Cara eventually saw the ball end up in Maja’s hands, and she crashed over for a try under the posts. Cara once again converted, making the final score 14-5!

The girls had one game left but unfortunately couldn’t build on the momentum from the Welshpool game. They came up against an incredibly strong Ysgol Brynhyfryd side, who showed great quality in the match. However, our girls fought hard until the end and didn’t make it easy for the eventual winners.

It was a fantastic day in the sun and an extremely positive experience for our girls, who haven’t had as much rugby experience as the majority of the other teams, so well done girls! A big thank you to Gareth Kelly for his help with the team and to Dai Higgs and his team for organizing an enjoyable day of rugby!
