U14 & U16 Rugby vs Caereinion
In the sunshine on Wednesday we welcomed Bro Caereinion for boys u14 & u16 rugby fixtures. Our u16s put in a gutsy effort before going down 43-17 and our u14s dug deep to come out 7-5 winners in an excellent & determined performance.
Our u16s continued to make progress in their latest fixture against an experienced Llanfair team, despite conceding three early tries from the visitors. Good work from strong running back rows James Riordan and Kyle Ashley, along with Llanfair indiscipline, gave Newtown a foothold back into the game, resulting in the home team finishing the half the stronger and just coming up short of the try line after creating some good chances. The second half saw silky outside half Liam Edwards, powerful centre George Farrington and lively scrum half Oscar Davies finishing good moves to cross for Newtown tries, Liam converting one. Llanfair responded well each time, moving the ball wide and early to find space and score 4 tries and one conversion. Final score 17-43.
Our U14s again showed tremendous character and demonstrated an ongoing improvement to see out a nail-biting 7-5 win against strong opposition.
In a scoreless first half, Newtown just about edged it in terms of territory and possession, but could not quite translate that into points. Strong running saw the team threaten the Bro Caereinion line on a few occasions, but committed last ditch defence kept them out. In defence, Newtown showed again how much they have come together as a team, working together to cut down the space and shut out the dangerous opposition runners. Newtown continued the second half as they finished the first, and from a lineout, worked a nice move to see No.8 Shane Jones cross in the corner. Centre Dylan Jones converted to give Newtown a 7-0 lead. Bro Caereinion found a way back into the game and scored themselves to take the score to 7-5. This was to remain for the rest of the game, and Newtown put in a tremendous collective defensive effort in the final moments, culminating in a solid tackle in the corner by centre Tyler Mitchell which saw the ball knocked on, signalling the end of the match. A really solid team display, with every one of the squad contributing to a well deserved win.
Da iwan pawb, well done everyone on representing the school so well again and a big thank you to Llanfair for coming down! Next up is Llanidloes in two weeks time!
