Newtown High School

U14 Hockey Tuesday 3rd December

On Tuesday 3rd December, our U14 Girls Hockey Team represented the school brilliantly at the U14 Hockey Tournament held at Welshpool High School, playing against teams from Ysgol Uwchradd Llanidloes High School, Bro Caereinion and Welshpool High School.

Considering the mix of Year 8 and 9’s that played, as well as the fact that none of our girls play club hockey makes their performances against strong hockey sides even more impressive! This will give our year 8 girls valuable experience for next year’s hockey competitions.

In the first game, Newtown defended superbly throughout, limiting eventual winners Welshpool to few opportunities to score, but conceded late to lose 1-0. A similar theme emerged in the second game against Llanidloes, where some amazing effort and determination defensively prevented Llanidloes from scoring until late, where again Newtown lost to an agonising 1-0 scoreline. In the final game, Newtown faced a strong Bro Caereinion side who scored two early goals and added a third straight after half time, but the girls showed fantastic character, refusing to give up and kept the scoreline to a respectable 3-0 with some outstanding defending.

Many of the girls were praised by other teachers present for their performances and told they need to start attending hockey clubs if they can, after how well they played, which is fantastic! Standout performances came from Abi and Nikola who defended unbelievably throughout and first-time goalkeeper Mia who made some important saves! Well done girls!
