U13 Boys Powys Champions
Our U13 Boys Football Team were yesterday crowned Powys Champions after beating their Caereinion counterparts in a tense Powys Final of the Welsh Cup!
A strong start saw Newtown take an early lead after good play in midfield from Alvaro and Jack, leading to an opportunity for left wing Tommy to calmy finish from 25 yards out. The back four of captain James, Ethan, Charlie and Brooklyn helped keep the visitors at bay with solid, well-organised defending. Newtown continued to dominate the midfield, helping wingers Logan and Tommy to make a series of dangerous runs down the Caereinion flanks, linking up really well with centre-forwards Tom and Alfie. One such run down the left led to a cross from Tommy finding its way to right wing Logan, who finished with aplomb from inside the box into the top left corner of the net to make it 2-0 to Newtown after 20 minutes. Llanfair managed to get back into the game after a rare attack into the Newtown box saw their centre-forward finish well with a looping shot to make it 2-1 at half-time.
Newtown started the second half with an early chance to put some daylight between them and the visitors after Alfie was fouled in the area for a penalty to be awarded, however the Llanfair goalkeeper kept his team in the tie with a solid save from Tom's spot kick. The game carried on with Alvaro and Jack in midfield putting in a big shift to win back possession and look to launch Newtown chances. James at the back, now ably assisted by substitute Luca, carried on intercepting and cutting short the Llanfair attacks. Fresh legs in substitutes Callum and Rohan came on to rest flagging bodies and hlp defend the 2-1 lead. However a dangerous Llanfair attack with just over 10 minutes to play saw their attacker finish well to make it 2-2. The remaining 10 minutes, a tense affair with neither team managing to keep possession for long, ticked away leading to a penalty shootout to decide the outcome. Ultimately the Newtown penalty takers of Tom, Tommy, Alvaro, James and Alfie held their nerve to calmly score their spot kicks, before goalkeeper hero Ryan Williams saved the last Llanfair penalty to earn the win for Newtown and crown them Powys Champions!
An excellent team performance once again where every player showed fantastic effort, resilience and composure to earn their place in the National Round of 16 in the Welsh Cup. Da iawn pawb, very proud school!
