Powys Rugby 7s u14 & u15 Boys

Yesterday saw our u14 & u15 Boys rugby teams take part in the annual Powys Schools 7 a-side rugby tournament in Llanidloes. Both teams gave it their all in the spring sunshine, improving as they played more after a slow start adapting to the 7 a-side game.

Our U14s, with a core of experienced club players but playing 7s for the first time, lost their opening game vs Bro Caereinion 15-0, however adapted and improved their performance and tactics for their second game vs a strong & physical Brecon team. Despite good defensive work from Tyler & Finn, they conceded two early tries but came back into the game well with a try from Tyler after a strong run from Shane, to finish the game 12-7. Their third match, against eventual Cup winners Crickhowell, saw Newtown start off strongly after good work from Dylan which led to early tries for Tyler and Elli, however their showed why they would go on to become overall winners by replying with 4 tries of their own to finish the game 26-14. Unfortunately, the boys didn't get to play a fourth game due to a late school withdrawal.

Our U15s team gave it a really good go and improved lots as the day went on against experienced opposition, despite having only two club players in their squad. A try from Vincent, after strong running from captain Kyle, in their opening game vs Bro Caereinion wasn't quite enough in a 15-7 loss and then came up against a classy Crickhowell team in their second game, resulting in a 27-0 victory for the eventual runners up from South Powys. The boys kept at it though and finished with two really encouraging performances in their remaining games. Their next game against Maesydderwen from Ystradgynlais, saw two fine tries finished off from Kyle, before the boys finished with their best performance of the day against Gwernyfed. Tries from Riley, Kyle and a fine 80 meter effort from Aiden saw the boys leading for most of the game, however a late rally from Gwernyfed saw them edge it 21-19.

A big thank you to Dai Higgs and RGC team for organising an enjoyable day of rugby!
