North Powys KS3 Football Tournament
On Thursday, all three of our teams finished 5th. However, this doesn’t paint the full picture, as they all played incredibly well and could’ve finished much higher in the standings on another day.
Our year 7 team were extremely competitive throughout starting with two clean sheets and 0-0 score lines thanks to great work from goalkeeper Adele and defenders Ella and Claire. They then suffered 3 defeats in a row, one against the run of play and two against high quality opposition. However, they responded brilliantly in their final game, winning 1-0 thanks to a Madison free kick that was flicked home beautifully by Emilia!
The year 8’s kept a similar theme of strength at the back accumulating 3 clean sheets on the day, thanks to some inspired goalkeeping from Sofia . Confidence was high early after a 5-0 thrashing, thanks to a Sioned brace and a superb Lola hat-trick! Unfortunately, the goals then dried up, which was best summed up in the game against eventual winners Llanidloes when Newtown dominated, having several shots at goal without reward before being picked off on the counter and losing 1-0.
The year 9’s started with defeat against a very strong Welshpool side. However, they showed great character in the next match by winning comfortably 3-0, thanks to an extremely well taken Laci hat-trick, with one of her goals coming from a brilliant nutmeg assist from Phoebe. Laci then found herself on the scoresheet again in the next match and was joined amongst the goals by Lowri. After two narrow defeats, they then finished with a 0-0 thanks to some great defending from Leal and Ozge and great goalkeeping from Nikola.
Big thanks to Year 11 GCSE PE student Maria Ewers and Year 9 Silver Ambassador Lara Francis for their help in running two of the teams, they were amazing!
