James Corfield Memorial Cricket Match vs Welshpool
Tuesday 1st July saw the annual match up between Newtown HS vs Welshpool HS in very good conditions at Montgomery Cricket Club.
Played in fantastic spirit throughout, Newtown fielded first with a good spell of accurate bowling from Jack, Finley, Corey and captain Alfie, with the remaining overs shared between Tommy and Logan. The experienced Welshpool batters put in an impressive display totalling 111 runs for 6 wickets by the end of the 16 overs. Highlight for Newtown was the wicket from yr7 bowler Tommy, playing his first ever game of cricket, whose delivery was expertly caught by Logan out at Third Man following a high cut shot from the Welshpool batsman.
Newtown, knowing they would be up against it with only 3 club cricketers and 6 pupils playing their first ever game of cricket, gave it a good go with the bat, Jack & Alfie bravely opened against Welshpool's pacey opening bowlers. A quality piece of fielding saw Jack run out in the third over with a direct hit from a throw from mid-wicket. Finley was top scorer with 12 runs, partnered by Charlie and then first-timers Keegan, Tommy, Thomas, Callum and Jayden, however it wasn't enough with Newtown finishing on 36 runs with Welshpool finishing as deserved winners.
Was fantastic to see 6 of our pupils playing cricket for the first time, hopefully this will see more join their local cricket club. A massive thank you to the Corfield Family and Montgomery Cricket Club once again for giving our pupils this opportunity!
